Pour
- Contact database (270M+ contacts, 60M+ companies) makes prospecting actually work for solos
- Built-in email finder and verifier reduces the bouncing-email problem
- Multi-step sequences combining email and LinkedIn touches in one platform
- Integrates with HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive, Zapier, and the major CRMs
- AI personalization helps sequences avoid the obvious-template trap
- Free tier is genuinely useful for prospecting at very low volume
Contre
- Realistic working tier is Basic at ~$49/mo; the free tier is more of a trial
- Database quality varies by industry: tech contacts are excellent, others patchy
- Email deliverability is your problem: a hot sequence from a fresh domain will burn it
- Credit-based pricing surprises mid-month for active prospectors
- The aggressive outreach culture can drift into spammy practices if you let it
Why Apollo.io over the rest of the outbound stack
The honest version: for a solo doing B2B outbound, the typical stack used to be three tools: a database (ZoomInfo, Lusha, Cognism), an email finder/verifier (Hunter, NeverBounce), and an engagement tool (Outreach, Salesloft, Lemlist). Each of those costs $40-200/mo, the integrations are fiddly, and the per-tool overhead eats more time than the outbound itself.
Apollo.io bundles the database, the finder, the verifier, and the sequencing engine into one platform. For a solo running outbound, the consolidation is the whole story. You stop paying three subscriptions, the data flows from prospect lookup to sequence enrolment in one click, and the CRM-lite tracking covers the basics without needing a separate Pipedrive or HubSpot seat.
The closest competitors do part of this well: Lemlist nails sequence design but lacks the database depth, Instantly nails deliverability but has no contact data, ZoomInfo has the data but charges enterprise prices. Apollo is the rare combination that hits enough of each at a solo-friendly price.
What it does well
- Contact database with real coverage. 270M+ contacts is meaningful in 2026; the gap to ZoomInfo has closed for most use cases. Filters by job title, seniority, company size, industry, funding stage, and tech stack work the way you want them to.
- Email finder and verifier in the same tool. The finder pulls verified emails for most contacts directly; the verifier flags risky addresses before they bounce. Both happen inline as you build a prospect list, not in a separate $30/mo tool.
- Sequences that combine email and LinkedIn touches. A typical solo outbound cadence (Day 1 email, Day 3 LinkedIn connect, Day 5 follow-up email, Day 10 LinkedIn message) is built and tracked in one place.
- CRM-lite tracking. Conversations, deal stages, basic pipeline. Enough for solos who do not need a separate Pipedrive or HubSpot setup yet.
What I use it for
Prospect list building for cold outbound campaigns: pull a list of marketing directors at Series A/B SaaS companies in North America, verify the emails, enrol in a sequence. Lead enrichment when an inbound prospect lands and I need the LinkedIn URL and recent role moves. Light tracking of active deals before they justify a real CRM.
Pricing reality
The free tier (~50 email credits/mo, limited filters) is genuinely useful for evaluation but caps fast on real prospecting. The realistic working tier is Basic at ~$49/user/month: roughly 1,200 email credits, unlimited sequences, full database access with the most useful filters.
Professional ($79/mo) is the right tier if you run sequences at meaningful volume (more than 200 prospects per month) or if you need the AI personalization features at scale. Organization ($119/mo, annual billing) is for solos who treat outbound as their primary acquisition channel and have the volume to justify the credits.
Credit consumption is the variable to watch. A 500-prospect campaign with email lookup, verification, and a 4-touch sequence consumes more credits than the marketing implies. Plan the tier from observed monthly usage during the first paid month, not from the lowest published price.
Verdict
Worth the subscription if cold outbound is a real acquisition channel in your business. Skip it if your acquisition model is content, paid ads, partnerships, or word-of-mouth: the tool is overhead, not investment, for non-outbound-led solos.
