Tidio (AI bot + live chat at solo prices), Crisp (similar feature set, slightly different positioning), or Intercom (enterprise-grade tool at enterprise prices, typically $74-1,000+/month). The fourth option (no chat at all) is what most solos default to and what costs them the most in missed enquiries.
The closest competitor analysis: Intercom is the gold standard but priced for teams, not solos. Crisp is the closest direct competitor with similar pricing; the differences come down to bot capability (Tidio's Lyro is currently stronger out of the box) and ecommerce integrations (Tidio has deeper Shopify integration). - Mobile app that actually works. Most live chat tools have weak mobile apps. Tidio's mobile app handles live conversations well; you can respond to visitors from anywhere.
- Ecommerce integrations. Deep Shopify integration (order history in the chat window, abandoned cart triggers, product recommendations). Solid WooCommerce and BigCommerce support.
What I use it for
A bot that handles the top 20 questions visitors ask about my services (pricing, process, scheduling, who I work with). Conversations that the bot cannot answer route to live chat on my phone; I usually respond within 10-15 minutes during business hours. Captured emails from chat conversations flow into the CRM automatically. The setup runs 24/7; visitors who ask questions at midnight get a useful bot response and either book or learn enough to come back.
Pricing reality
The free tier covers 50 conversations per month with basic features. Sufficient for very low-traffic sites or pure evaluation.
The realistic working tier depends on traffic:
- Starter (~$29/mo) covers 100 conversations/month, basic AI bot (Lyro), email support
- Growth (~$59/mo) covers 250 conversations/month, full Lyro features, advanced reporting
- Plus (~$398/mo) is enterprise pricing for solos running at scale
The Growth-to-Plus jump is steep with no middle tier; most solos stay on Growth until they outgrow it entirely. The Lyro AI Chatbot add-on is a separate cost on some tiers (~$39-99/mo) for higher conversation volumes.
The honest math: at 100 conversations per month, Starter pays for itself if even one conversation per month converts to a paying customer at any meaningful price point. The economics work for any solo with website traffic that produces sales.
Verdict
Worth the subscription if you have any meaningful website traffic with sales-or-support implications. Skip it if your traffic is below 500 visitors/month (the conversation volume does not justify the subscription) or if you sell purely through outbound and the website is just a credibility check.
